Oral Cancer Screening
As your dentist, it is our job to help you keep your entire mouth healthy. There is more to this than cleaning your teeth and checking for cavities. We are also here to evaluate any changes or abnormalities, which could be indications of oral cancer.
Nearly 50,000 cases of oral cancer are diagnosed every year in the U.S. If left untreated, this condition can be life-threatening. We are in a unique position to diagnose and detect oral cancer in its earlier stages before it progresses.
When performing an oral cancer screening, there are a variety of symptoms and indications that we look for during your exam. In between dental checkups, you should keep an eye out for these symptoms as well, and if they occur, make an appointment to see us as soon as possible.
Changes to be aware of include:
- Ear pain
- Change in voice
- Chronic sore throat
- Difficulty speaking, swallowing or chewing
- Persistent mouth sores
- Any tenderness or pain
- Unexplained bleeding
- Speckled, red or white velvety patches
- Erosion, crusting, rough spots, lumps, thickening or swelling
Certain factors increase your risk of cancer. Patients with HPV, excessive sun exposure, a family history, excessive alcohol or tobacco intake should be checked more often.
At Hoffman Smiles, we can provide a thorough oral cancer examination during your regular checkup. We will look at your mouth, lips, tongue, throat and surrounding tissues for any abnormalities. To learn more and to schedule your appointment, give us a call today at (847) 250-6979.
