4 Tips in Properly Taking Care of Your Dentures

BY hoffman smiles

Missing teeth can pose damage to oral health in the long run if not replaced as soon as possible. Problems with missing teeth can be addressed with dentures. Dentures are custom-made, removable appliances that can replace the missing teeth and help restore the smile. Wearing new dentures may not feel exactly the same as the natural teeth since it takes some time to become accustomed to wearing them; however, today’s dentures are natural-looking and more comfortable than ever.

Dentures, like natural teeth, should be properly taken care of. Doing so ensures the condition of both the dental prosthesis and mouth. To properly take care of your dentures, here are some tips:

Clean the dentures daily

Brush the dentures daily the same way of brushing the teeth. However, using toothpaste must be avoided. Toothpaste is abrasive and can create microscopic scratches where food particles and plaque can accumulate. Instead, clean the dentures using a soft-bristled toothbrush that is specifically designed for cleaning dentures. Using a hard-bristled toothbrush can cause damage or wear down the dentures. Brush all surfaces of the denture gently and be careful not to damage or bend the attachments and plastics. It is also essential to rinse the dentures after every meal to remove any food particles left.

Treat the dentures right

Placing a folded towel or filling the sink with water is recommended, especially when the dentures are being cleaned. This can prevent the dentures from breaking if it falls into the sink or if they were accidentally dropped. When dentures aren’t worn, place or soak them in cool water or a dental cleaning solution to keep them from drying out. However, if the denture has metal attachments, soaking it in a cleaning solution can tarnish the metals. Dentures should also never be placed in hot water because it can warp them.

Remove the dentures every night

Dentures, whether it is partial or full, should be removed every night to allow the gum tissue beneath it a chance to rest.

Visit the dentist regularly

Visiting the dentist regularly is essential in keeping the dentures and oral health in top condition. Dentists can also help ensure that dentures are properly fit to avoid any slippage and discomfort.
